NextGen Committee Summer Updates

By Justin Breyer

I would like to share some updates on a few ongoing NextGen Committee projects. If you have any questions about the MME NextGen Committee or any projects that the committee is undertaking, please do not hesitate to contact me at Jbreyer@dextermi.gov or at 734-580-2234. Also, if you have contact information for any students that have expressed interest in our profession, please forward it to me.

Virtual Social Meet Up
In a normal year, the MME NextGen Committee would host a number of in-person events, including dinners at the Summer and Winter conferences, Professional Development Days, and social events for students. Unfortunately, this has not been a normal year. From my perspective, one thing that this abnormal year has diminished, and something that I know I am missing, is the opportunity to simply get together and socialize with colleagues and peers. This includes the opportunity to welcome new members, introduce our organization to students, and commiserate with the great support network that this organization’s membership offers.

For these reasons, the MME NextGen Committee is working on planning a Virtual Social Meet Up for MME members and students interested in the profession. This event will be casual dress and bring your own beverage. A date and time have not yet been set, but please keep an eye out for more details about this event.

MME Fellowship Program
The committee has matched two students with host communities for the MME Fellowship Program. We would like to welcome Kathryn Beemer, who was matched with the City of Wayland, and Steven Hoy who was matched with the City of Plymouth. Thank you to those communities that submitted applications to serve as host communities for the 2020-2021 MME Fellowship Program. The committee received applications from four students aspiring to be fellows, and from seven communities interested in serving as hosts.

The MME Fellowship Program is an annual program where two fellows are matched with host communities and serve in their host community for a 1-year term. This program requires a financial contribution from the host community of $6,000. The MME and partnering university contribute $3,000 each for a total of $12,000 to be paid to the fellow for their year of service. Please watch for another Call for Applications for the Fellowship Program next year.
