Students Welcome: How MME Is Opening the Door to Future Municipal Leaders

At the January Michigan Municipal Executive Board meeting, the Board took action to clarify and strengthen our membership structure with an eye toward growing the profession and inviting the next generation of local government leaders into MME.

One area of discussion at the meeting centered on the former Emerging Leader membership category. Historically, this category was intended to engage early-career members, including students and interns who did not already work full-time in public administration. However, feedback from members revealed confusion about eligibility, particularly where the Emerging Leader and Affiliate Member categories overlapped. In response, the Board unanimously approved a revision to the Emerging Leader definition and rebranded it as the Student Member category.

Under the updated structure:

  • A Student Member is defined as an individual who is a student enrolled in an accredited learning institution for a bachelor’s or master’s degree. This simplification removes ambiguity about who qualifies and aligns expectations across institutions and agencies.
  • The Student Membership is $20 per year and may be held for up to two years, providing sustained early engagement as students transition into professional local government careers.
  • Student Members receive complimentary registration for both the MME Winter Institute and Summer Workshop, encouraging students to participate in flagship professional development events at no cost.
  • All students meeting the definition are eligible for this category unless they qualify as a Professional or Affiliate Member.

This change will be in effect starting with the 2026 Summer Workshop and reinforces our commitment to engaging emerging talent in municipal management. By clearly defining membership expectations and benefits for students, we aim to remove barriers to involvement, foster early connection to the profession, and help develop Michigan’s next generation of municipal executives.

Full details of all MME membership categories, including Affiliate, Professional, Retired, Consultant, and Manager in Transition, can be found on the 2026 MME Membership Application. Continued clarity in membership categories supports MME’s mission to strengthen local governance by building an inclusive, diverse, and professionally prepared membership community.
