ICMA Happenings

By Patrick Sullivan

A lot has been happening on the ICMA front recently.

The ICMA will have a Non-CEO Vice President slot open for the Midwest Region in 2019. Assistant or Deputy Mangers qualify for nomination, either by MME or by following ICMA’s self-nomination process. If selected by the ICMA Executive Board, the nominee would serve a three-year term on the Board. Preference is given to those states that don’t already have someone serving in one of the two “traditional” VP slots. Those slots are currently held by Managers from Illinois and Minnesota, so Michigan is in the running for the 2019 selection.

The ICMA Executive Board is committed to diversity and inclusion, and in particular is encouraging women, people of color, and early- and mid-career professionals to apply. I would encourage anyone interested in applying to follow the instructions here.

Application materials are due to ICMA by December 3.

Other ICMA News
Many Michigan members were in attendance at ICMA’s 104th Annual Conference held in Baltimore, Maryland last month. The conference drew the third largest attendance at 3,413 attendees. Keynote speakers included Daniel Pink, Doris Kearns Goodwin, Greg Bell, and Wes Moore.

The Michigan reception was held at the Pratt Street Ale House and a good time was had by all. We raised a glass in memory of our fallen friend Adam Umbrasas, who passed away at age 35 on September 24. Thanks to our MML staff for setting up a great event for us.

The following current and former MME members were recognized with service awards in Baltimore:

45 Years – John Szerlag, Thomas Tarkiewicz, Mark Wollenweber
40 Years – Randy Terronez
35 Years – Michael Cain, Anton Graff, Ron Howell, Jerome Kisscorni, Diana Kollmeyer,
Dale Krajniak,
30 Years – George Bosanic, Paul Brake, Alan Dolley, Penny Hill, Pat McGinnis,
Darrel Schmalzel, Ryan Wood
25 Years – Robert Belleman, Pete Dame, Jason Eppler, Tim Klunder, Brian Murphy,
Mike Overton

Congratulations on your many years of membership in ICMA and your substantial contributions to good governance in our state!

The next ICMA Executive Board Meeting will be held in Detroit, Nov. 29 – Dec. 2.  The session will be held at the Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center. The meetings typically last the full day on Friday and Saturday. When I get more information regarding the agenda, I’ll pass it along. ICMA Members are welcome to attend.
